These shoes originate from the Pashtunistan region between Afghanistan and Pakistan, home to the Pashtun people who are the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan and the second largest in Pakistan. They practice Pashtunwali, which is a pre-Islamic identity and the indigenous culture of the Pashtun people, which many still consider significant and a part of what keeps the Pashtunistan issue alive. Despite the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan splitting most of the Pashtun tribes, many ignore this border line and cross it freely to attend weddings and visit relatives. These shoes are commonly used in Pashtun weddings and referred to as slippers rather than shoes.
