This particular carbine was known as the second variation, which dropped the addition of the patch box in the butt stock. These carbines saw use by cavalry forces on both side of the civil war. Lock is marked "J.H. MERRILL BALTO/PAT. JULY 1858/APL. 9. MAY 21-23-61". Lock is dated "1863". Breech mechanism marked "JH MERRILL BALTO/PATENTED JULY 1858". Breech mechanism is numbered "18154".
