Manufactured by the J.M. Marlin firearms company between 1874-1891 as a simple and reliable rifle. Operated via a falling block action, by a lever, once the lever was actuated downward the breech block would "fall" allowing for cartridges to be loaded into the chamber. The internal components of the firearm were well protected from the elements and other dirt and debris, ensuring reliable function. There were many different options available for the Ballard rifle such as double triggers, one set trigger, which was desirable for rifleman, tang mounted aperture sights and even a reversible firing pin. This examples receiver is marked "J.M. MARLIN NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A/PATENTED JANUARY 9 1875/BALLARDS PATENT. NOV 5 1860".
