Leon J. Cole (1877-1948) was born in Allegany, New York. He received degrees from the University of Michigan, A.B., 1901, and Harvard University, Ph.D., 1906. In 1906 and 1907, Cole served as Chief of the Division of Animal Breeding and Pathology at the Rhode Island Experiment Station. From 1907 to 1910, he served as an Instructor of Zoology at the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University. In 1910, he became Associate Professor of Experimental Breeding in the College of Agriculture, University of Wisconsin, and was made Professor in 1914. His title was changed to Professor of Genetics in 1918 and he remained in that capacity until 1947. Cole was a member of the Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899 and participated in zoological expeditions to Bermuda, 1903; the Yucatan, 1904; Tortugas, Florida, 1906; Europe, 1911 and 1924; and Alaska, 1941. He also served as an investigator for the United States Bureau of Fisheries during the summers from 1901 to 1906.  W. Earle Mulliken (donor)

W. Earle Mulliken was a student of Emma Cole's at Central High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1893. He assisted in the collection of specimens for Cole's Flora project. He later studied ornithology at the University of Berkeley in California.
