George B. Aiton (was collected by) Alternate names: G. B. Aiton George B. Aiton was an American botanist. From Minneapolis, George B. Aiton studied the local flora in connection with the University of Minnesota, particularly the plants of Itasca State Park. Employed as the first inspector of high schools for Minnesota in 1893 he took on this role for over 20 years and standardized the requirements for school staff and edifices. In this capacity, he also edited numerous books for students, including Rand McNally's Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin and Sir Walter Scott's poem Lady of the Lake. He is commemorated in the name of a fire tower in Itasca State Park, "Aiton's Heights".
