A publication from High Point, North Carolina distributed to editors directly involved the Home Furnishings Industry. Separate photographic prints, also featured in the newspaper, were included and the editors were encouraged to advertise the images in their publications. These publicity materials reflect the Southern Furniture Market (now called High Point Market), a furniture industry trade show that begun in 1921. The Grand Rapids Public Museum has a small collection of ephemeral material related to the Southern Market. At a time when the Grand Rapids Furniture Market began declining (1950s), other national markets such as those in High Point, Chicago, and New York, maintained strong attendance and profit. Several similarities and differences can be seen in marketing tactics among the various furniture markets held in other cities. In 1965, with ever-declining numbers of exhibitors and buyers, the Grand Rapids Furniture Market Association discontinued the exhibition in Grand Rapids. Remaining furniture companies moved their showrooms to the exhibition buildings of High Point.
