Description:
This bowling shirt is white with a teal collar and teal striped accent on the front pocket. The name "Dot" is stitched over the left breast. Stitched in orange on the back is an outline of the United States, partially written as "TNBA Central Region". Inside the outline of the United States is a map of the lower peninsula of Michigan with Grand Rapids identified. Another figure stitched in orange, somewhat like a molar, is a white hand and a black hand clasping. The name Irvin is stitched in teal on the left shoulder. The National Bowling Association is a non-profit organized in August 1939 in Detroit for the purpose of encouraging Blacks to develop their bowling skill. Prior to 1939 national bowling associations had a non-Caucasian clause that prohibited Blacks from joining leagues. TNBA actively participated in the "Equality for Bowling" proposal in 1950 that got the national bowling associations to remove the non-Caucasian clause. Since 1951 TNBA members have enjoyed competing in all open sanctioned tournaments.
Dorothy Irvin was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame Oct 16, 2004 as an outstanding volunteer to the Grand Rapids Bowling Community for over 30 years. Having served as President of the local TNBA Senate since 1988 and recognized as President of the year in 1999. She has served as a local WIBC director for 6 years. Her competitive spirit has earned a spot on the Senior All City Team 8 times from 1996-2003.
