Black History ➔ Sweatshirt

Identifier:
2022.78.2
Description:
This sweatshirt was created by Reginald James, owner of RegJames Klothing, in support of Grand Rapids resident Patrick Lyoya. On April 4th, 2022, Patrick Lyoya, an unarmed Black man, was killed by a Grand Rapids police officer during a traffic stop after attempting to flee the scene on foot. Lyoya is one of the many Black people killed by police officers in America which gave rise to the Black Lives Matter movement and increasing appeals to reform policing practices in the 2010-2020s.

This hooded sweatshirt is made of red cotton and polyester and features an image on the front of Patrick Lyoya with the words "Justice for Patrick" across the top and bottom. Next to Lyoya's image are three patches: a circular Black Lives Matter fist that reads "Say His Name | No Justice No Peace", the US flag, and the Republic of Congo flag. The front pocket and hood interior are decorated with African-style fabric and the proper right sleeve reads "Justice for Patrick". The proper left sleeve has a patch for RegJames Klothing and another for Grand Rapids, Michigan.
