Identifier:

Description:

Fifteen items: five small dishes, six miniature metates, three miniature grinders, and one white object. All except three made of very porous, rough stone. One red pottery dish, and one red-painted jug. White object probably painted pottery.

Traditionally, pre-Columbian peoples offered miniature household items such as metates, pots, etc., as sacrifices to Tlaloc, the god of rain and agriculture. Today, Miniatures remain a very popular and highly evolved tradition throughout Latin America, but are often reserved for use by children and tourists.
