Description:
This top hat is made of black silk plush, also known as hatter's plush. It has a black cloth band around the base of the crown and is roughly 16 centimeters tall. The silk plush is treated with shellac which helps to waterproof the hat. This hat was made by Dunlap and Company and was sold by Mackenzie, Bostock, Monroe of Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was worn by Henry Idema and is accompanied by a leather storage case.

Robert Dunlap was a previous employee of Knox Hats in New York but when he was refused for a raise, he left to open his own store. The two stores became rivals, with Dunlap & Co. becoming the popular choice, especially for derby hats. In the 1910s, however, both Knox and Dunlap businesses began to decline. In 1918 the two companies merged. Eventually, they were bought out by Byer-Rolnick which was then bought by The Hat Corporation of America. This company became D.J. Henry Idema of Grand Rapids, Michigan was born in 1856 to Henry Idema and Frances Vanderploeg. He was a banker and was Chairman of the Board of Old Kent Bank since 1908. He was also the Vice President of the Michigan Trust Company. On February 3rd, 1880 he married Annie Doornink and together they had three children: Chester F. Idema, Walter D. Idema, and Edward H. Idema. He passed away on January 5th,1951 and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mackenzie, Bostock, Monroe Company (sold by)
Mackenzie, Bostock, Monroe Company was a retailer based on Monroe Ave in Grand Rapids. Early records show the company was in operation as early as 1912 and was registered in Grand Rapids until at least 1986. They were known for their quality clothing, neckties, menswear, hats, and furniture. The original President was C.W. Monroe, the Vice President was M.W. Henry Idema (1856-1951), a founding investor of the Metal Office Furniture, now known as Steelcase, was also President of the Kent State Bank, and Chairman of the Board of Old Kent Bank upon the 1929 merger of Kent State Bank and Old National Bank. Henry retired in 1950. Henry Idema married Johanna "Annie" Wilhelmina Doornink (1858-1953) in 1880. Johanna was the daughter of John H. Doornink, an early partner of Paul Steketee. In 1862, the two men formed a dry goods business under the firm name Doornink and Steketee. Henry and Johanna Idema lived at 284 (now 324) Lyon St NE and 103 College Ave SE . The College Ave home had been built in 1895 by Edward Lowe, and purchased by Henry in 1906. Henry and Johanna raised three sons: Chester (1886-1978), Walter (1889-1979), and Edward (1890-1972).
