Description:
This hat made of straw wicker has artificial flowers and lace around the crown. During the 1920s hats were smaller and fit more closely to the head. With its large size and wide brim, this hat was most likely worn during the summer months. The straw wicker would have allowed the wearer to stay cool and the wide brim would have protected them from the sun. Because of the style, this hat may have been worn during mourning. Mourning clothing became popular in the Victorian Era but after 1900 the strict etiquette diminished. Mourning periods became shorter and there were not as many rules towards women's dress.
