This is a dress coat from the United States Navy of the United States Armed Forces. It was worn by Lieutenant George Goodhue Clay in 1875. According to museum records Lieutenant Clay went around the world with Commodore Matthew C. Perry in 1852 to 1854, however, he would have only been around seven years old at the time.
This dress coat is made of navy blue wool and features stripes on the sleeve cuffs that represent Lieutenant ranking. It is double breasted and has gold buttons down the center front.
