Identifier:
132530
Description:
This piece is an example of a religious embroidery sampler. It was completed on a perforated paper, also known as punch paper, at the peak of this method. Punch paper generally had the pattern pre-printed on it which made the process of embroidery quicker. It is common among samplers and embroidery pieces to see religious imagery and phrases. "Trust in God" is stitched onto this piece. Since it was framed was most likely hung on the walls as decoration and as a demonstration of her skill in needlepoint. The religious phrase suggests that it could have also been a form of promoting their religion as well as a way of life and "proper" behavior and thought. This piece was created by the mother of the donor and remains unique among the museum's collection due to it being framed, the imagery, and size.
