This satin evening dress has an overlay of tulle and lace. There is a velvet insert on the center front of the bodice that has a floral pattern. The collar is trimmed with beading, sequins, and lace. The boned bodice has a basque waist and velvet bows on the front and back. The short puff sleeves have velvet cuffs which are trimmed with lace and beading. The skirt is gathered at the center back and has a train. Features that indicate this dress is from the late 19th century are the short puff sleeves, the boned bodice, the hourglass silhouette, and the basque waist.
This dress was worn by the donor's mother, Clara Russell who served as vice president of the State Equal Suffrage Movement from 1909 to 1914. It was sold by The Horton-Fleming Co..

She married Huntley Russell in 1884 and together they had two sons, Charles and Francis. She was the President of the Ladies' Literary Club from 1906 to 1908. She later became the first Vice President of the State Equal Suffrage Association. Mrs. Russell was highly involved in many community committees and functions. She was a state chairman for the women's branch of the engineer's national committee, the president of the St. Cecilia society, the president of the Kent Garden Club, an organizer of the State Anti-Tuberculosis association, a member of the D.A.R., a member of the American Legion Auxillary, secretary of the women's board of Butterworth Hospital for 25 years and then later the president of the women's board of Butterworth Hospital. Mrs. Russell passed away on June 18th, 1935 and is buried in Fulton Street Cemetery.
